“Hi, I’m a Tea Partier”

This video on talking to a tea partier is about the most comprehensive dissection of Tea Party talking points I've seen. Life is not Wikipedia. There are objective facts. Just because you repeat something a lot doesn't make it true. Best line: “I’m sorry. But that is not true. Words have actual meanings.”

This election cycle, common sense and facts will hopefully prevail over fear, misinformation and innuendo. Share this with your friends – and vote!

Portrait of a Bookstore as an Old Man

Paris - Latin Quarter - Shakespeare and CompanyImage by wallyg via FlickrThe bookstore is Shakespeare & Company, on Rue de la Brie in Paris. The old man is its recently retired American expatriate owner, George Whitman, now in his 90s. He opened the place in 1951 and inherited the name from Sylvia Beach's legendary shop from the 1920's. The store is open until midnight, the books are in English, and writers often use it as a hotel, in exchange for a little work. For more information, here's a good link. Originally aired: 2005 on the Sundance Channel.

The Latest Palinism From Lady BlahBlah

Palin From the January 14 edition of Fox News' Hannity:

"I think he (Reid) is driving a bus that is headed towards a train wreck in America; and he, Pelosi and Obama want us to be on it… ."

I enjoyed this comment on the Media Matters site, I had to share it.

“by RKAllen (January 14, 2010 10:30 pm ET)

I am struggling with this metaphor...
"... driving a bus that is heading for a train wreck that is going to happen in America..."
So, are we supposed to be the bus...? America I mean? Or is the bus a metaphor for a program that Reid is pushing that is heading us to a catastrophe that has already happened... i.e. the train wreck? And why are we stopping at a train wreck? And this train wreck... is it supposed to be a metaphor for something that has already happened and we are going to be witnesses to its aftermath as we pass by in the bus?
Is... is Reid promoting a National bus tour of famous train wrecks...?
... a little help? Anyone?”

Let's Fire Up the Wayback Machine, Shall We?

This is a very well preserved, and amazingly well shot film of Moscow Clad in Snow (Moscou sous la neige) from 1908. It was filmed by Joseph-Louis Mundwiller (1886 - 1967) an Alsatian cinephotographer who worked in French Cinema most of his 25 years in the business. It was shot for Pathé Frères, and the music is Aleksandr Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia (1880). Enjoy.

Violence Happens Any Time We Violate the Integrity of the Other

One of the wise public intellectuals of our time, Quaker writer, traveling teacher and activist Parker Palmer works with people from all walks of life at the intersection of spiritual, professional, and social change, and stresses the need to acknowledge the inner life of human beings as a source of reality and power. This is one of a series of interviews he did for The Center for Courage and Renewal, a non-profit he helped cofound.

With All Due Respect Madam Ambassador…

Last night Rachel Maddow had a discussion and dissagreement with UN Ambassador, Susan Rice. There's no shouting, no storming off, no sound-bites. No vacuous discussions of Tiger Woods or other fake distractions pretending to be news. Just two very well spoken, intellegent people debating a very important issue. The President's plan to send the War in Afghanistan into overtime and add at least 30,000 more troops.

That’s Vinni Puh, Comrade Piglet

The Soviet Pooh (Винни-Пух) may be drawn more simply, but comes across as more real, more complex, and wiser than his Disney counterpart. As Star Trek’s Pavel Chekov might say, “You can’t truly appreciate Winnie the Pooh until you’ve watched it in the original Russian.” This is truly a masterpiece of Soviet animation, and may change the way you see Vinni.

Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (SoyuzMultfilm - 1972) with English subtitles.
